An artist with a genetic mutation paints paintings that have 100 times more color shades than usual
The human eye can distinguish about a million color shades – this is enough to perceive the world in all its diversity. However, there is a rare genetic mutation that allows you to see up to 100 million colors. People-tetrachromats are born very rarely, and therefore the work of the American artist Concetta Antico arouses such interest. Unfortunately, only people with the same anomaly can fully appreciate the ocean of color raging in her paintings.
Without going into medical and anatomical details, it is very difficult to explain the phenomenon of tetrachromacy. People, the exact number of which, by the way, is not even calculated, have, according to scientists, an additional type of color receptors. It is difficult to find out exactly how many children are born with this mutation, since most tetrachromats may not even notice that they are different from ordinary people. This is exactly what happened to Concetta. The girl was born in Australia, and until the age of seven, no one suspected about the features of her vision. However, after she began to draw, some oddities began to appear. Bright, rich paintings evoked unusual feelings in people, and parents soon suspected that something was wrong with the young artist. Concetta seemed to see something else in her paintings, something that was not visible.
“When I was 12 years old, my mother told me that I would become a great artist. I just laughed and didn’t think much of it. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved bright colors. When my friends said that they saw something strange in my drawings, I did not attach any importance to it. But once my picture was seen by a student-tetrachromat and then everything became clear” – the artist tells about herself.
The parents took the girl to a research center, where scientists were able to determine that she, too, is a carrier of a strange genetic mutation. Of course, she saw no other way for herself than to connect her life with art. Today, Concetta is not only an established artist whose paintings are admired by people all over the world, but also an art teacher at a University. Its peculiarity helps to create an amazing color world on the canvases, but, unfortunately, only some people can appreciate it in all its splendor.
However, there were also events in its fate that can be estimated as the evil taunts of fortune. One day, Concetta’s daughter started having problems with her studies. The girl grew up diligent, but the teachers were constantly dissatisfied with her. When the family started asking questions, the girl admitted that she could not see the letters and numbers written on the Board. There were no problems with her vision, and the baby was sitting in the first Desk. After a conversation with the teacher, it turned out that she writes on the blackboard not in white, but in orange chalk. Perhaps that was the problem. Unfortunately, the doctors diagnosed the girl with color blindness. Scientists believe that people tetragammaton the probability of having children with abnormalities of the visual apparatus is much higher, so Concetta close to her heart was her child. Of course, it is very sad that the closest person is able to appreciate her work even less than ordinary viewers.
Interestingly, this structure of the eye is characteristic of insects, as well as some species of birds, fish and reptiles. An additional color receptor also allows you to see better in the dark. However, like many other skills, the ability to distinguish between different color shades are able to develop. Researchers believe that the phenomenon of the American artist – not only in its genetic features, but also in the fact that the girl from an early age was engaged in painting, improving natural data. By the way, everyone can check how sensitive they are to the perception of color shades. This test, compiled by Professor Diana Derval, allows you to identify opportunities in this area. Those who see more than 33 shades in this picture may consider themselves people with extremely developed color sensitivity and potential tetrachromats. In this case, it is possible that you see the world more brightly than most people, and are able to appreciate the painting of Concetta Antico.
